Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup butter
- 3 eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 ½ cups flour
- pinch salt
- ½ teaspoon bicarbonate soda
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- 60 g dates
- pieces of walnut
Instructions
- Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add milk then sifted dry ingredients. Divide mixture into three. Leave one plain. Add cochineal to one and cocoa to the other. Put into greased 28 x 18 cm tin in layers - plain, dark and pink.
- Have ready dates rolled around in walnut pieces, pr dates with piece of walnut in each. Press into mixture. Dates and nuts sink to the bottom. Bake 25 to 30 minutes in a moderate oven. Ice with chocolate icing.
