Instructions
  1. In a saucepan, put 1 ½ cups water, 1 cup raisins, 250 g butter, 1 cup sugar, ½ teaspoon each of cinnamon and ground cloves, 3 heaped tablespoons cocoa and ¼ teaspoons salt. Stir together well, bring to the boil, then let simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  2. When cool, dissolve 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda in about ¼ cup boiling water and add to the mixture along with 2 cups sifted plain flour.
  3. Stir to combine well and then pour into a greased, lined 23 cm cake tin and cook for 30 minutes in a moderate oven (180˚C).
